We’re all aware of the ways our bodies speak to us, yet many of us would benefit from listening a little closer. We have so much wisdom within! The Sumerian Goddess Inanna is a master at looking within. As the Goddess of Love, she is a teacher of womb wisdom. The daughter of the moon god Nanna and the moon goddess Ningal, Inanna’s lineage is linked to the magic of monthly cycles and the potency of the womb’s creative process. Inanna emphasizes honoring our sexuality and prioritizing our own pleasure. Each of us came into this world from a womb and are all, therefore, connected to this powerful center.

Womb wisdom is about the generative process of calling into being. It is not just the seat of conceiving and growing a physical life, but it gives birth to consciousness as well. Connecting to your womb wisdom does not require having a womb. There is no exclusive age for doing so either. This energy resides in each of us and connects us to our mothers, the Creatrix herself, and the womb of the planet.

Reach Out to Inanna for Healing

In connecting with your womb, you begin a conscious connection to your own cycles and can begin to process any healing that may be needed therein. Many of us have sustained physical or energetic traumas in this center, resulting in shutting it down or doubting our unique creative ability to express ourselves. Inanna’s resurgence offers a vibrant and healthy model of living by womb wisdom. Her unapologetic nature highlights her ability to own all parts of herself, the shadow, the light, the in-between. Call on Inanna to begin the journey of reclaiming your own womb wisdom.

Moon Magic

Many of us consider our menstrual cycles an inconvenience—something we dread. Throughout history, the lineage of womb teachers has highlighted how important and sacred that cycle is. Some cultures allowed a time of seclusion for a menstruating woman and considered a woman to be her most powerful when bleeding. In many ancient cultures, menstrual blood was used in ritual. Even today, some pagan rituals use “dragon’s blood” in their ceremonies, a red resin found in many different plants but may have been an allusion to the blood of menstruation. The reference to “dragon” may have emerged from the creation myths of the Mother Dragons, who were thought to have given birth to creation. Transmutation is part of dragon medicine, but it is a significant aspect of womb wisdom.

After all, it is within the womb that energy transforms into matter, and the seeds of our ideas begin to take root. Historically, it was thought that when women bled, they were not only purifying themselves but the whole community as well. It would serve us well to reinstate such a perspective today. The cycles of the moon instructed our ancient ancestors about the cycles within.

Cauldron as Creative Womb Portal

The historical practice of using cauldrons in rituals is connected to the womb. A cauldron embodies the dark space where things are transmuted and conceived. Consider getting yourself a cauldron to use in your own rituals. It will help you connect with your womb lineage, the sacred mothers of creation who came before you.

Below are some ways to connect more deeply with your own womb wisdom and reclaim the feminine power that resides within to create the life you want.

Ways to Strengthen Your Womb-Wisdom

  • Place an energetically clean moonstone crystal on your womb center as part of your daily meditation practice.
  • Get body work that emphasizes womb care, like acupuncture or modalities that can adjust your hips if they are out of alignment.
  • Use mantras to help anchor in womb awareness such as:

I am deeply connected to my womb center.
I only perpetuate the strengths of my womb lineage.
I easily express and share my creativity with the world.
I embody a healthy, strong, vibrant, joyful and perfectly balanced womb center.

  • Teach young women about the sacredness of their menstrual cycle.
  • Pay attention to the cycles of the moon and use a journal to record how you feel and what shows up for you during a new moon, a full moon, and during its phases of waxing and waning.
  • Once a day, say a prayer to this powerful center while touching your lower abdomen with both hands. For example:

Thank you for being my sacred connection to creation and helping me feel my power.

  • Engage in any creative expression, draw, write poetry, sing a song in honor of your womb power.
  • Engage in intimate connections!
